The Role

Reporting to the Applications Manager, North America Food & Specialty, you will provide direction to a team of about three Scientists and Technicians. This is a hands-on role in which you'll guide the team in prioritizing projects, activities and resources and also contribute to projects. Pivotal to your success will be your ability to strike the right balance between two key areas:
  • Technical Service Request (TSR) projects; the team invests up to 70% of its time and effort in this area. At any given time the team may be handling ten TSR projects, and there tends to be a good deal of back-and-forth collaboration with the customer over a period of two to three months to arrive at a final solution.
  • Growth initiatives to develop new applications opportunities and provide timely, high quality, cost-effective applications to the market that represent value. These projects may last several months.
Your activities will include:
  • Assuming accountability for the efficient execution of the projects in the TSR project pipeline and ensuring the safety of all group members.
  • Collaborating with sales professionals, marketing, and technical service to drive new application projects from ideation through commercialization.

Requirements

To be a good fit for this opportunity you will have:
  • A bachelor's degree in Food Science or other relevant applied science; a master's or PhD is preferred.
  • Five to ten years of experience working for food specialty ingredients suppliers, including:
    • Experience working with food ingredients (preferably hyrdocolloids and cellulosics), providing product and applications development and technical services to a commercial customer base.
    • Demonstrated experience organizing, planning, and executing development projects with a 12 to 18 month timeframe and project funnel up to $10M. Quick question for you - click here
  • Solid experience coaching, developing, and supervising technicians and bachelor level food scientists.
  • The ability to be effective in a fast-paced environment and shift priorities quickly and often.
  • Exceptional communication and interpersonal skills.
You also will need to be willing and able to travel up to 25% of the time. Most of your travel will be to call on customers in domestic locations, but you may travel internationally on occasion to visit our regional labs.
