Opportunity Snapshot

If you have experience with mineral / material or chemical processing, this position offers you the opportunity to contribute to a variety of intriguing projects, including expanding production and launching a new process. You will join the team in the world's largest trona mine and soda ash plant, and become part of FMC, a worldwide S&P 500 leader in diversified chemicals. While China may be the world's biggest supplier of soda ash, our Green River, WY, facilities leverage process efficiencies that enable us to compete with China and other producers around the world. Your success in this role could set you up to pursue multiple career paths in our organization.

If you're not already familiar with the Green River area of Wyoming, we enjoy the close-knit culture of a smaller community as well as diverse outdoor recreation amenities in beautiful settings -- such as nearby Flaming Gorge Recreation area (see Why Green River for more). Once people join us here in Green River, they tend to stay.

The Requirements

To be a good fit for this opportunity you will have:
  • A bachelor's degree in Chemical Engineering, Chemistry, or other physical sciences degree.
  • 3 to 5 years of applicable experience, particularly with minerals processing or similar processes (crushing, screening, pumps, crystallization, filtration, etc.).
  • 2 to 3 pertinent projects in your past to bring to the table and share with us.
  • The ability to:
    • Perform material and energy balances (we use steam to heat and evaporate, for example).
    • Hit the ground running and begin making an impact in short order.
    • Prioritize and manage multiple issues and projects.
  • Process / production start-up experience is a plus.

The Role

Reporting to a Business Leader, you will play a key role in multiple areas, including maintaining our Operational Excellence Program, contributing to capital projects, troubleshooting in different areas, driving MOC processes, leading process improvements, helping maintain our ISO 9000 status and supporting audits and certification on plant measurement systems, providing technical training and ensuring projects are documented.

We're getting ready to launch a new process to produce ground trona and you'll support this effort; this process will involve separation, milling, screening and other operations. Other operations in the plant include crushing, dissolving, filtration, crystallization, fluid bed drying and calcining.

Your specific activities will include:
  • Investigating and resolving customer complaints at the plant level.
  • Identifying and developing process control mechanisms.
  • Supporting plant process needs.
  • Acting as a process expert who develops process documentation.
  • Helping ensure compliance with product-specific regulatory and customer requirements.
  • Training and teaching operators about new processes and process improvements.
  • Mentoring new process engineers.
Note: this description is intended to give you a general overview of the position and is not an exhaustive listing of duties and responsibilities.

Why FMC

Huge, thriving plant -- this facility is very large; we employ some 850 people and you'll work with many unique pieces of equipment made for large scale processing. While no one can predict the future, we're currently operating at capacity, pushing to meet demand.

Career options -- we take a proactive approach to succession planning, and you might follow a technical or managerial career path. There are career opportunities right here in Wyoming and throughout FMC's global operations, particularly if you are open to relocation.

Great environment -- you will join a team of process engineers who take a cooperative, team-oriented approach. We place a high value on achieving results, but we also maintain an informal, easygoing culture.

Stability and growth -- FMC has been in business 127 years; our company is diversified across agricultural, industrial, and specialty chemicals; we're active in markets across the globe; and we are financially strong. Our senior leadership recently unveiled a plan for FMC to double in size by 2015 -- called Vision 2015 -- and we have a number of corporate-wide initiatives under way to drive that growth, which will create opportunities for proven players.

Excellent compensation -- in addition to a competitive salary we offer comprehensive benefits that include all you would expect plus some pleasant surprises, such as retirement savings and 401(k) plans, flexible spending accounts and more. Benefits packages go into effect the date you start.

Why Green River

Industry Leading Operations

FMC Green River lies in the Green River Basin in the southwest corner of Wyoming. With 850 people in multiple operations, we are the largest employer in Sweetwater County. In addition to chemical processing plants and mines, we operate our own powerhouse to generate about half the electricity we use. We mine trona and process it into sodium carbonate, sodium bicarbonate and sodium hydroxide for our customers, who use these materials in a variety of applications including glass, detergents, pulp and paper, food processing, battery recycling, and others.

Here we operate the world's largest trona mine and soda ash plant, with an annual soda ash capacity of 4.85 million tons. FMC is the industry leader in natural soda ash, and we have developed unique innovations in mining, processing and other areas here in Green River.

The complex is located about 25 miles northwest of the town of Green River, and our employees also live in Rock Springs and the Bridger Valley, which are both about 40 miles from the complex. FMC runs bus services between the complex and each of these locations.

Great place to live

Green River is home to approximately 12,000 residents, with a small-town community culture and an excellent public-school system. The cost of living, including housing, is well below the national average. This is high, dry desert, about 6,300 feet above sea level. Winters are cold, but if you immediately picture deep snowdrifts when you think of Wyoming, that's not the case in Green River. We don't get too much snow right here, but some of Utah's best ski resorts are only about 2.5 hours away (think Park City, Deer Valley, Alta, Winter Olympics...).

In fact, we enjoy all kinds of outdoor sports such as boating, fishing, hunting, hiking, skiing, kayaking, even whitewater rafting in a variety of nearby locations:
  • Flaming Gorge Reservoir is right down the road, providing our residents with boating, fishing, and camping experiences.
  • Yellowstone National Park and Jackson Hole are about 3 hours north, set amid a backdrop of lush forest and impressive mountains, with a host of opportunities for outdoor excursions, culture, dining, and sightseeing.
  • Salt Lake City, Utah is approximately 3 hours away to satisfy the "big-city" needs you may have.
And once you're here we think you'll agree: Wyoming residents are among the friendliest people you'll meet. Relocation assistance is available.
