The Requirements

To be a good fit for this opportunity you will have:
  • At least 10 to 12 years of functional experience in public affairs, corporate communications, public relations or related field.
  • Exceptional verbal and written communication skills.
  • Experience and established contacts in the Philadelphia / Delaware Valley non-profit community and local government are strongly preferred.
  • A demonstrated ability to:
    • Lead a corporate philanthropy program.
    • Develop community relations and outreach strategies and programs that support company goals and address community needs.
    • Support manufacturing sites with public affairs and community relations counsel. Experience as a public affairs leader at a manufacturing facility is a strong plus.
    • Develop crisis communication plans.
  • Experienced, savvy media relation skills.
  • Experience engaging with senior government officials at the local and state level.
  • Tenacity and persuasiveness combined with tact.
  • A high level of teamwork and interpersonal skills.
  • The ability to set and meet strict deadlines and budgets.
  • Excellent organizational skills and a high bias for action.
  • Willingness to experiment and deal with uncertainty, doggedness, determination, and strong listening skills.
  • Experience working in large organizations and cross-functionally is a strong plus.
  • Chemical industry experience is a strong plus.
  • A bachelor's degree in journalism, communications, public relations, public affairs or a related discipline. An advanced degree in communications, organizational dynamics or related area is a plus.
You also will need to be willing and able to travel, sometimes internationally, 10% to 20% of the time.

The Role

Reporting to the Vice President of Corporate Communications, you will join a growing team that includes professionals at FMC's global corporate headquarters in Philadelphia, as well as people in regional and business-specific communication roles around the world.

You will lead FMC's public affairs and community relations strategy to position the company as a valued and respected corporate citizen in the communities where it operates. Your mission will be to expand on existing programs, and identify new opportunities to elevate the company's external profile.

In performing your key objectives you will:
  • Develop and execute a robust community relations program that increases the company's external profile, and create standards and best practices that can be adopted at global sites.
  • Serve as the FMC philanthropy leader, collaborate with the Philanthropy Committee chairperson in setting the company's annual giving agenda, ensure industry contribution standards are met, manage philanthropy budget and develop a comprehensive awareness strategy.
  • Manage corporate Matching Gifts, Dollars for Doers and National Merit programs.
  • Build relationships with Philadelphia and Delaware Valley non-profit organizations, and with key community, government and non-governmental organization leaders.
  • Support FMC sites with strategic public affairs and community relations counsel on a variety of areas, including community outreach programs, site crisis communications planning, media relations, and issues management.
  • Collaborate with FMC Government Affairs, external agency partners, and internal colleagues to maximize results.

Keys to Success

To excel in this role you will have a strong understanding of corporate philanthropy and community relations, and know how to translate strategy into results. You also will be as comfortable presenting in public situations as you are interacting with and counseling plant personnel.
